On August 8, the NINJAL, together with National Institute of Japanese Literature, National Institute of Polar Research, The Institute of Statistical Research, held a workshop on discovering careers for high school students. Thirty students from Hyogo High School and two of their teachers attended the workshop.
Associate Professor Tomokazu Takada (Dept. of Linguistic Theory and Structure) discussed research methods in (a) philology, (b) research on letters and orthography, and (c) information processing in kanji (Chinese characters). For example, he talked about standardization of character encoding systems. He also discussed kanji as an intriguing research field, a field that he himself studies.
After the talk by Assoc. Prof. Takada, Research Supporting Specialist Sadao Yamada showed around the NINJAL, including the exhibition room, which was renovated just before the workshop, on July 23.
There was much positive feedback for the workshop. For example, one of the students said that he found the workshop very useful because he could now understand how what he studied could serve as the base for his future career.
