Project leader:AOKI Hirofumi
Invited Associate Professor, NINJAL

Summary

The aim of this project is to study the historical evolution of Japanese grammar based on the thorough examination of classical texts and various dialectal data, while incorporating insights from the theoretical research of modern Japanese.

The project recruits leading experts of each linguistic period. By unifying their analyses, we expect that a dynamic picture will emerge regarding the evolution of Japanese grammar which will reveal the roots of contemporary varieties of Japanese.

We will deal with a wide variety of topics with the intention of establishing the criteria for judging if a certain description can be considered as having explanatory necessity as an account of the historical change of language in question.
