Warrongo is an extinct Australian Aboriginal language that used to be spoken in northeast Australia. This volume is largely based on the rich data recorded from the last fluent speaker. It details the phonology, morphology and syntax of the language. In particular, it provides a truly scrutinizing description of syntactic ergativity - a phenomenon that is rare among the world's language. It also shows that, unlike some other Australian languages, Warrongo has noun phrases that are configurational. Overall this volume shows what can be documented of a language that has only one speaker.(By permission of De Gruyter Mouton)

Grammatical Change : Origins, Nature, Outcomes

Dianne JONAS, John WHITMAN, and Andrew GARRETT (Eds.)

Oxford University Press (details), November 2011, ISBN: 9780199582624

Grammatical Change : Origins, Nature, Outcomes edited by Dianne Jonas (University of Frankfurt), John Whitman (NINJAL), and Andrew Garrett (UC Berkeley) advances research on grammatical change and shows the breadth and liveliness of the field. Articles collected in the volume present research into the nature and outcomes of all aspects of syntactic change including grammaticalization, variation, complementation, syntactic movement, determiner-phrase syntax, pronominal systems, case systems, negation, and alignment. The chapters deploy a variety of generative frameworks, including minimalist and optimality theoretic, and bring these to bear on a wide range of languages: among the latter are typologically distinct examples from Germanic, Romance, Slavic, Greek, Korean and Japanese, Austronesian, Celtic, and Nahuatl. The introduction, by Whitman, Jonas, and Garret, presents an overview of generative research on syntactic change from the 1970s to the present. (By permission of Oxford University Press)
