This department pursues theoretical, empirical and experimental studies of modern Japanese concerning its grammar, phonetics, phonology, lexicon, morphology, semantics, pragmatics, discourse, and orthography. We have started collaborative research projects on the Japanese lexicon with primary focus on its phonological and syntactic/semantic/morphological aspects, as well as on modeling the ecology of writing and its application to sociolinguistics.
To illuminate the characteristics of Japanese, it is vital to compare the language with other languages in the world, especially on the basis of linguistic theories. This department aims at conducting comprehensive research on modern Japanese, hopefully including brain science and language acquisition.
