Anti-Harassment Policy

Anti-Harassment Policy for Events at the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics (NINJAL)

The National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics (NINJAL) organizes events such as NINJAL Colloquia, NINJAL Symposia, NINJAL Forums, and NINJAL Salons, as well as research meetings conducted by its faculty members, to promote academic research related to the Japanese language.
To ensure free and equal exchange of ideas, opinions, and discussions at these events, NINJAL does not tolerate any form of harassment. Acts such as unilaterally devaluing research, or making statements that undermine the dignity of presenters or participants, constitute harassment.

NINJAL defines harassment as the following acts:

  • Verbal attacks, criticism, bullying, or aggressive comments
  • Aggressive or intimidating behavior
  • Persistent disruption of presentations or other event activities
  • Unauthorized photography or recording
  • Inappropriate physical contact or sexual harassment
  • Intentional threats or stalking, whether in-person or online
  • Use of sexually or racially discriminatory images or materials in public spaces
  • Ignoring, encouraging, or defending such acts
  • Making false allegations of harassment

Event organizers have the authority to warn participants who engage in serious harassment and immediately revoke their participation. Offenders may also be banned from future NINJAL events.

If you experience or witness harassment, please report it to a NINJAL faculty member at the event or contact the office below. Upon receiving a report, NINJAL faculty members, excluding those with a conflict of interest, will discuss appropriate action. If you disagree with a harassment determination, you may also contact the office below. Confidentiality regarding the complainant and the details of the report will be appropriately maintained.
