Visiting Researcher

The National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics (NINJAL) accepts Visiting Researchers who specialize in Japanese language studies (including Japanese language education) or related fields, from universities or research institutions both in Japan and abroad. Visiting researchers are expected to secure their own funding, as NINJAL does not provide financial support under this program.
In order to apply, choose a prospective host from among our full-time academic staff and obtain their preliminary consent. After consulting with a Department Head (for example, the Dean) from the applicant’s current institution, make an application as follows.

How to Apply

Applicants must submit the following documents to the Director-General of NINJAL, at least two months prior to the desired start date (three months prior if a Japanese visa is required).

Curriculum Vitae, List of Research Achievements, and Research Plan

  • Japanese format Word
  • English format Word
  • A letter of request / recommendation from the head of the applicant’s current institution (no specific format required)

Research Period

In principle, the maximum period for acceptance is one year. However, this may be renewed up to a maximum of three years.

Use of Facilities

Visiting Researchers are allowed access to NINJAL's facilities, equipment, and library resources.
