- 講演要旨
- Old Japanese (8th century) had a set of verb forms which are usually termed Imperative (nakye “Sing!”), Prohibitive (na naki so “Don’t sing!”) and Optative (or Desiderative) (nakanamu “I wish (the cuckoo) would sing” / kikana “I wish to ask” / kurasane “I wish (you) will spend (today merrily)”). Of these, the Optative forms do not survive into the modern language.
In this talk, I will discuss the grammatical properties and the functions of these forms: how they differ from each other, but eventually with a focus on what is common to them, showing that they together constitute a sentence mood which is distinct from the declarative and interrogative moods. In doing so, I will draw on the notions of linguistic function from the European traditions of Karl Bühler, Roman Jakobson and M.A.K. Halliday. - キーワード
