- 講演主旨
- The year 2000 can be considered the beginning of the digital era in European language cartography in the sense that the main instruments of geolinguistics, the national dialects atlases of the major European languages from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, appeared on the web. The pilot project was the so-called “Digital Wenker Atlas” (DiWA, 2001-2003, today accessible at https://apps.dsa.info/sprachgis/atlas/wa/), the online version of Georg Wenker’s “Linguistic Atlas of the German Empire”. Wenker’s original work consisted of 1668 map sheets which were hand drawn 1888-1923 by Wenker and his successors, stored at Marburg’s Research Center “Deutscher Sprachatlas” and never published as a book. In 21st century, after a short intermediate period in which paper atlases were accompanied by digital support (on CD-ROM or on the web) for, e.g., audio files, language and dialect atlases were conceptualized as online publications right from the beginning. Today paper atlases are produced, at most, for specific purposes, usually with less or simplified information with respect to the web versions, e.g., for public-outreach actions. However, this new standard poses challenges with respect to long-term storage and accessibility of online atlases. The number of digitally created atlases that are no longer accessible is increasing. The talk comprises three parts. In Part 1 the “pioneer era” of digitalization is illustrated with the creation of DiWA. Part 2 describes the practices adopted for digital map creation in the context of AlpiLinK (“Alpine Languages in Contact”) which is a project hosted at the University of Verona and dedicated to the investigation and the enhancement of dialects and minority languages in northern Italy (https://alpilink.it/en). In Part 3 the risk of temporary or permanent inaccessibility of digital atlases is illustrated with concrete examples. This will, preferably, give rise to a discussion concerning possible solutions of the issues.
