- "Classifier Marking in Assamese: A Nominalization Perspective"
- Gitanjali Bez (Gauhati University)
- This study deals with an analysis of classifier marking in Assamese adopting the framework of nominalization proposed by Shibatani (2017, 2019). Unlike many languages in which classifiers are exclusively used with numerals, Assamese classifiers mark some other structures, such as demonstratives, genitives, adjectives, and participle structures along with numerals. This study shows how Assamese classifiers are used with these structures when they are used as an NP and a modifier within an NP. The study reveals that classifiers in the language obligatorily apply to numerals and demonstrative in their NP use, but optionally to genitives, adjectives, and participle structures. If the referent denoted by these structures in their NP use are indefinite, classifiers cannot be used with them. Only the definite referents need classifiers. The structures on their modification use, on the other hand, show a great deal of variation permitting or not permitting classifiers to be added to them. Numerals cannot be used without a classifier either in NP or in modification use. However, demonstratives and genitives show a couple of significant transitional points in the use of classifier marking with them across the dialects. Classifiers are optional with both in modification use and it is motivated by two pragmatic factors - definiteness and contrastiveness. Adjectives and participles do not allow classifiers to mark them in their modification use. This presentation deals with these synchronic variations considering the diachronic development of classifier marking in the language to show how synchronic variations can be well accounted for incorporating diachronic perspective in terms of the nominalization framework offered by Prof. Shibatani.
- "Classifier and Gender System in Magahi: From the Perspective of the Nominalization Theory"
- ISHIKAWA Sakura (The University of Tokyo)
- I examine the structural and functional distributions of the classifier and gender marking system in Magahi, a New Indo-Aryan language according to the nominalization theory (Shibatani 2019 among others). Magahi is crosslinguistically unique in that it possesses both classifier and gender marking systems. First, I demonstrate the data on Magahi supports the prediction of the functional distribution proposed by the nominalization theory. Second, I show the structural distribution observed in Magahi diverges from the anticipated patterns proposed by the nominalization theory. I suggest this may be attributed to the language contact, which facilitated the coexistence of the classifier and gender system.
